Benefits of the Golden Years
by A. P. McGinty, Editor and Publisher.
The frets of youth are gone. You no longer have to display bulging muscles, ability to run or toss large rocks into the next county to impress someone who probably ignored you. When you are along in years you can coast on what you might have done earlier. After all, you do not have to prove anything at your age. Philosophy should help you over the bumps that lie ahead. Also, by this time there’s nothing you can do about it!
No Livestock on This Bus!
“One year we rode the buses through northern Mexico,” began A. J. MacReady. “The road was recently paved in the north and then ‘twas tracks over the country side. There were first class, second and ‘mixto’ classes. The last were trucks with wooden benches and space for freight. During this trip we’d ridden in each class. Believe me, the ‘mixto’ were to be avoided, if possible!
“The time I remember best was when we were going in a first class bus to Culiacan, Sinaloa. An elderly man waved us to a stop and started to board the bus carrying a chicken. ‘Ah, no, no,’ exclaimed the driver, ‘this bus is of the first class and no livestock is permitted!’
“‘Very well,’ said the old one as he drew a knife and slit the bird’s throat. ‘Now that it is dead, may we ride with you?” he asked as he started toward the back with blood dripping.’”

A Stroll Down Memory Lane
by Edith Cleaves
About 1912 my dad came driving home in a new EMF (Studebaker or Every Morning Fix) automobile. It was a shiny black body, varnished wooden-spoked wheels and side curtains of canvas with celluloid windows in case of rain.
On Sundays, off we’d go, after checking the Prestolite tank on the running board. I’ll always remember that Klaxon horn, which father used at each curve and there were many. Dad with his auto cap, mother with her veil over her pretty hat tied under her chin. Both wore toe-length linen dusters to keep out the road dust, a-Klaxing away at no more than 30 miles an hour. I remember how mother looked behind us constantly for fear somebody would run into us.
To Be Continued.
Helpful Hannah’s Household Hints
For beginners at house cleaning – never strike the floor forcefully with a shovel. It’s bad for tile.
