Lyrics, Laureates, Lincoln’s Lighthearted Awards Lift Banquet
Yum Yum Moitoret and Pitti-Sing Whitbread led in the lordly high execution of a Resolutions Committee report at the closing banquet.
Laureate awards were made in only two categories due to lack of entries.
Fiction Laureate: Jacob L. Warner, “Aunt Sarah and the Pigeon Drop,” Boxwooder.
Honorable mention: Helen Middleton Amos, “Charlie,” in Scarlet Cockerel.
Miscellaneous Prose Laureate: Harold Segal, “A Matter of Correctness,” Campane.
Honorable mention: Robert S. Williams, Jr., “Robert Ingersoll: Scientific Creationist,” Boxwooder.
Louise Lincoln mistressed the ceremonies and presented a slate of critics awards which far outnumbered the genuine laureate awards, of which there were only two. What Louise offered in quantity, she made up for in quality.
… and there were Surprises
In a surprise award, Gale Sheldon presented Joe Curran with a bound volume No. 106 of The National Amateur. Vic Moitoret called the convention into secret session in order to present Bill Boys with a pair of shoulder eagle devices in advance of Bill’s official frocking ceremony in August.
A late comer to the convention was Neca Allgood.
24 Survivors ‘Party’ at the Picnic
A sumptuous picnic lunch was enjoyed by the survivors. It was hosted by Gale and Ruth Sheldon at their home in El Cajon.
Survivors of the survivors plan to brunch at the Admiral Kidd Officer’s Club on Sunday hosted by Capt. (Sel.) Bill Boys. It is anticipated that there will be no further survivors.
Apparently, Willametta Keffer was kidnapped at this convention since she never appeared.

Now comes word from the Grouch!
This was the first, no, the second, the first was a traditional trip through Disneyland with three granddaughters. Our genial host was Gale “Conventioneer” Sheldon. I’m sure that was a smile on his face – some people do bare their teeth when they smile, don’t they? Gee, I left the word ‘stop’ out in the second line so I guess this is a good place for it – STOP. – Jack ‘The Grouch’ Hageman
Visit to a Real Print Shop
by J. G. Wood
Since my shop, the Valle Vista Press is restricted to a 9×12 spare bedroom in my mobile home, I am always amazed when I visit another printer. At home I take one or two steps in any direction and reach an immovable or impassable object.
In Gale Sheldon’s shop, I can wander down spacious aisles, gaping at the many type cabinets, then sit at a desk behind Bill Gordon working at Gale’s Linotype and kibitz his efforts.
In this case, bigger is definitely better!
Marmalade is SO British!
Breakfasting the morning after the banquet, our ex-president, Irish Joe Curran, pushed aside a dozen pre-packaged marmalades and asked the waitress for grape or strawberry. “Some of my anti-English feelings, no doubt,” he observed.
Laureate Entries to be Carried Over
The by-laws were amended at this convention to provide for automatic carryover of laureate entries in categories with insufficient entries to hold a contest. This is permitted only once for those entries. This is done for the following year only with no further holdover permitted.
Change in Activity Requirement Proposed
The only proposed amendment to be voted on at Alliance, O. is a proposal to count any contribution published in an amateur paper and circulated in the bundle as fulfilling the activity requirement.

The Convention Count at San Diego: 57
