Women of the Old Testament: Zipporah
by S. Burghard
One of the Bible’s undistinguishable wives. In only three passages is she called by name, and these are brief. She came from a Midian background (Exodus 2:16). Her name means “bird.” Her father was a priest to some god, but he later became a believer for he professed to Moses, “Now I know that Yahweh is greater than all gods.” (Exodus 18:11). She was one of seven daughters and tended sheep. Her marriage to Moses is recorded in seven words (Exodus 2:21). She had two sons Gershom and Eliezer whom she refused to circumcise until Moses became very ill. Then she circumcised one, probably Eliezer. She is mentioned for the last time in Exodus 18:5. To neither her husband or her sons did she leave a legacy of spiritual riches. (To be continued)

The Cries of Young Eagles, Poems of Love and War, by Lonnie D. Lindsey. 48 pages $4.00 Exposition Press, Inc., 900 South Oyster Bay Road, Hicksville, New York 11801
This is an unusual, sensitively written collection of poems that exposes the black soul of war and pays tribute to the young warriors it feeds upon. The poet speaks for the silent heroes, the countless men who have suffered the brunt of all wars in the loss of home, friends, love and too often life. Delicate images of the gentle rhythms of lush summer nights are sharply contrasted with muddy war trenches, the maimed, the dead.
I especially liked “The Ghost of Ol’ Kinkerry” on page 8-9, “We Danced the Dance of Meeting” on page 15, “And the Breezes Speak” on page 27, and “Spring Love” on page 34.
Lonnie D. Lindsey was born on Sept. 29, 1950 in Newport, Tenn. While in high school he worked part time as a radio announcer, bag boy in a grocery store, and a carpenter’s helper. In 1968 he attended King College, Bristol, Tenn. as a ministerial student, studying philosophy. He later joined the army and attended OCS at Fort Benning, Georgia, and went on to army television as an engineer. Presently he is a TV Director for SCN-TV in the Canal Zone. He and his wife, Susan, have one daughter, Leila.

Closer Alone

There are times when a handclasp means more than a kiss;
Silent companionship more than multiple choice;
Times when God seems closer than ever
Because there is sound of human voice.
A Prayer for Those Who Live Alone
from St. Michael’s Trumpet, St. Michael’s Lutheran Church
Camillus, N.Y. 13031
I live alone, dear Lord,
Stay by my side,
In all my daily needs
Be Thou my guide.
Grant me good health,
For that indeed, I pray,
To carry on my work
From day to day.
Keep pure my mind,
My thoughts, my every deed,
Let me be kind, unselfish
In my neighbor’s need.
Spare me from fire, from flood,
Malicious tongues,
From thieves, from fear,
And evil ones.
If sickness or an accident befall,
Then humbly, Lord, I pray,
Hear Thou my call,
And when I’m feeling low,
Or in despair,
Lift up my heart
And help me in my prayer.
I live alone, dear Lord,
Yet have no fear,
Because I feel your presence
Ever near. Amen
